Andersen Curriculum

The Andersen Academic Team provides students with opportunities to expand their knowledge across a variety of subject areas while developing teamwork and academic confidence. Team members participate in quiz-bowl style competitions that challenge students to think critically, recall information quickly, and collaborate effectively with peers.

Academic Team encourages a love of learning, strengthens communication skills, and allows students to showcase their academic talents while representing Andersen in district and community competitions. 

KAND

Andersen’s morning broadcast is produced daily by our very own 5th grade students. 

This program provides an in-depth learning experience and is designed to inform the student body and staff of upcoming school, local, and national news. 

Parents are a big part of making the studio experience run smoothly. 

The Andersen Chess Club can’t wait to have your fourth and fifth graders join us! Chess is a popular activity for many students and helps develop problem solving skills. 

Under the sponsorship of our amazing parent partners, the chess club provides an opportunity for students to learn, practice, and compete in the game of chess. Students who are interested have competed in chess tournaments at school and/or within the district. 

Andersen offers a variety of extracurricular activities for students. 

The Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program provides enriched learning opportunities for students who demonstrate exceptional academic potential. Through engaging, inquiry-based experiences, students explore complex ideas, develop critical and creative thinking skills, and apply problem-solving strategies to real-world challenges.

GATE students participate in activities that encourage innovation, collaboration, leadership, and independent thinking while extending learning beyond the traditional classroom curriculum. Andersen's GATE program fosters intellectual curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

ALEKS (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces) is an adaptive online learning program designed to strengthen and extend students’ mathematical understanding. Through individualized instruction, students work at their own pace to master skills and concepts based on their unique learning needs.

ALEKS continuously assesses student progress and provides targeted practice to help students build confidence, close learning gaps, and advance into more challenging mathematical content. The program supports independent learning while encouraging students to take ownership of their academic growth.

Andersen Sound

Andersen Sound is our fifth grade honor choir.  Students involved in Andersen Sound practice after school and have opportunities to perform outside of school. Our music teacher is the sponsor for this choir. 

Andersen's Robotics program provides students with hands-on opportunities to explore engineering, coding, and problem-solving. Working collaboratively in teams, students design, build, program, and test robots to complete specific tasks and challenges.

Through the engineering design process, students develop critical thinking, creativity, perseverance, and teamwork skills. Robotics encourages students to apply STEM concepts in meaningful ways while preparing for competitions and real-world problem-solving experiences. 

Fifth grade students are trained to assist our families at arrival and dismissal times.

Project Lead the Way is a nationally recognized curriculum in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) education.  We are very fortunate to be a PLTW school within the Union School District.  Student have the unique opportunities to learn like engineers. 

Process

The process is key. Students learn to question, plan, try things out, evaluate, and communicate about what worked and what didn’t.  Students learn to become real world problem solvers. 

Student representatives support service projects to make our school and community a better place. 

Technology is an integral part of the learning process at Andersen.  Interactive Smart Boards are in each classroom and used for instruction on a daily basis. 

All students - pre-kindergarten through fifth grade - have access to our updated computer lab and there are updated computers in the classrooms as well.  We also have iPads to use in conjunction with our Project Lead The Way curriculum. 

Union students showcase their art work during YouthArts!

YouthArts! is one of the longest running festivals of its type in the state of Oklahoma.
